About Tales from Fiddler’s Green

Stories and poems of the magical and fantastic fill the pages of Tales from Fiddler's Green, the sister publication of the mainly nonfiction Fiddler's Green Peculiar Parish Magazine. For context, writers are encouraged to read the current issue of Tales from Fiddler's Green, available at fiddlersgreenzine.com.

Our Editor

We are thrilled to have Susan Redington Bobby as the series editor for Tales from Fiddler’s Green. Bobby is an accomplished writer, literary critic, and instructor who specializes in fairy tales, adolescent literature, goddess archetypes, and magical realism. She is the author of Beyond His Dark Materials: Innocence and Experience in the Fiction of Philip Pullman and the editor of Fairy Tales Reimagined: Essays on New Retellings. Bobby lives in Delaware and publishes under the name Miranda Rey.

Guidelines

For publication in Tales from Fiddler’s Green, short stories up to 2500 words in length, and poetry of 12 to 65 lines, are preferred. There may be space in this issue for one longer story (up to 4000 words), but priority will be given to pieces of 2500 words or fewer. If you are submitting two stories, only one may be longer than 2500 words.

We are especially interested in works in the vein of magical realism, speculative fiction, and modern (or timeless) fairy tale fantasy. Unsuitable genres include hard science-fiction, spy fiction, thrillers, grotesque horror, and graphic erotica. No particular theme is sought, although past stories in Tales from Fiddler's Green have dealt with (among other topics) wonder, yearning, memory, grief, loss, mythology, folklore, magic, and witchcraft.

Each writer may submit no more than two stories and/or two poems. Tales from Fiddler's Green is a small operation, and so in consideration of our editor's limited time, we must limit the number of submissions received. We invite you to send your best.

Each submitter should also include in their email a writer's bio of 40 to 80 words, beginning with the writer's name (e.g. "Jane Doe is...") and noting any previous publications, relevant achievements, or personal notes. A lack of prior publication will not affect your submission's chances.

Rights and Compensation

Compensation of $100 will be paid to writers via PayPal for each work upon its acceptance for publication. Subsequent publication rights for each work accepted will revert to the work's creator following the publication of this second issue of Tales from Fiddler's Green.

Illustrations

This new issue of Tales from Fiddler’s Green will be illustrated with images specially commissioned once the story list has been finalized. We are not currently soliciting for illustrators.
